Group yard debris by material before pickup. Branches, bagged clippings, loose soil, treated lumber, and chemical containers do not belong in one undifferentiated pile.

Create four staging zones

  • Branches and brush: bundle manageable lengths when practical.
  • Clippings and leaves: bag or contain loose material so it can be loaded cleanly.
  • Heavy natural material: keep soil, sod, stumps, and rocks separate because weight changes handling.
  • Non-yard material: pull out fencing, treated wood, plastic pots, irrigation parts, and trash.

Remove hazardous products from the pile

Pesticides, herbicides, fuels, solvents, and wet paint need a household hazardous-waste route. SLO County residents can use county drop-off facilities within the published household limits; verify current hours and acceptance rules before driving.

Five-minute pickup check

  • No chemicals or liquid containers mixed in
  • Loose clippings bagged or contained
  • Branches separated from soil and stumps
  • Truck path clear of irrigation heads and low branches
  • Gate width and pile location shared with the crew

Keep debris out of streets and drains

The City of Paso Robles warns against dumping yard waste, construction debris, and household items on private or city property instead of using a permitted facility. Stage the pile on property where it can be reached safely without blocking public space.
